Edifier S350DB or Bose Companion 50? Which one should you get? Short comparison review

Today we will compare two 2.1 multimedia speakers systems with a premium price tags, Edifier S350DB and Bose Companion 50. Which one is really premium, not only by the name? Let's find out!

Build Quality & Features

Bose is well know as a premium brand, but Edifier S350DB shows that You can make a product that feels even more premium while being a bit cheaper. Satellites and subwoofer of S350DB feel solid as a bunker and are finished to a high standard, the only issue some of you might have is the aestethical decision of Edifier to cover it in woodlike vinyl, as not everyone will like this type of finish. Bose represents quite a different aestethical approach, more minmalistic and modern and the overall fit and finish is good as well, but both satellites and subwoofer feel light and not as substantial in comparison to S350DB. Unfortunately both Bose and Edifier have short cables that connect sub with the satellites which limits the placement options.
Great advantage of Edifer over Bose is also very rich set of features. S350DB has 4.0 Bluetooth connectivity to stream your music from a mobile device, digital inputs to connect your TV or gaming console and a remote to control all those freatures from your couch (remote is oddly shaped but does the job well). Bose have none of those features mentioned while still costing more...

Sound Quality

While the difference in build quality was not that big, difference in sound quality is actually HUGE in favour of Edifier S350DB. If I was to compare Bose Companion 50 to Edifer S350DB in just a few words than I would say Bose sounds like a kitchen table radio next to full grown HiFi system that is Edifier. Bose has congested, artificial and manipulated midrange that dominates all the other frequencies. This midrange is manipulated in a way that creates big soundstage but one that is lacking any image precision and depthvcdue to manipulations. Bose also lacks treble extension and details being totally dominated by scratchy mids. Bass of Companion 50 fells flat and boomy in comparison to rich and extended bass of S350DB. Bass of S350DB not only sounds much better but also integrates with sound of satellites very well, while sub of Bose sounds like a separate sound source to its speakers never rally integrating well. Of course S350DB sound is not as well stiched together as a sound of good 2.0 system but it does very well while listening to music non the less.
S350DB overall sounds very coherent and detailed through out the frequency range, not only for a 2.1 system but also for any system available at this price point. Edifier's midrange sounds natural and neutral with nice depth to soundstage, same applies treble.

For movies and games, user will appreciate high speech clarity from satellites and well extended and punchy bass response from subwoofer (it digs below 40Hz easily). Bose again sounds flat, artificial and weird with no real details and natural tone.

Here is a sound comparison video from my YouTube channel that will showcase the vast differences Between Bose Companion 50 and Edifier S350DB I mentioned:

Conclusion

If you are in the market for 2.1 speakers system for either your gaming system, TV system or just a good music system for a livingroom than Edifier S350DB should be on your shortlist for sure. S350DB is the only 2.1 system that works well with movies and games as well as with music listetning. Actually Edifier S350DB can challange many typical stereo systems for music listetning experience at this price point. As for the Bose Companion 50, just avoid it, it is not worth more than half of its price on a good day.
